Why did I create a Badge of Courage™?

Last night, I had a very interesting conversation with three women. One of them had recently stopped breastfeeding her son, a year after his birth. She mentioned how he hardly got sick and if he did, it was something mild and non-important. She mentioned how happy she had felt being able to breastfeed and provide the best food for her son during the first year of his life. When I saw how she glowed as she spoke and how her happiness showed through, I realized; THAT’S WHY I CREATED THE BADGES OF COURAGE™!

Badges of Courage™

A Badge of Courage resembles a female breast and what does that symbolize? LOVE, FEMALE, SEXINESS, NURTURING, FOOD FOR OUR BABIES, MOTHERHOOD, LOVE (AGAIN AND AGAIN AND AGAIN!), MILK, NUTRITION, WOMANHOOD…

What happens when this beautiful, female, motherly part of us has cancer? That very beautiful, female part of us is invaded. We feel we will lose our identity as a WOMAN. We may no longer have those breasts that surprised us as they grew from a small bud into a blossoming BOOB when we were young, enticed our lovers and fed our children. They will now be removed, cut, mutilated and the scars will forever remain inside our hearts.

When my Mother had breast cancer, the reality hit me like a brick smacking my face. Although I had grown up with my Grandmother only having one breast, it was something I had not expected. I thought my Mother was “safe”, “untouched” by this CANCER word. Because of her diagnosis, she had to have a radical mastectomy and to see her with only one breast was so painful, I wanted to take her in my arms and tell her everything would be alright although I knew it would never be. She had already been under the knife.

Two years ago, I had the idea to create something that would symbolize the breast that had been taken from my Mother.  I created my first Badge of Courage™. It was  a hand painted white flower on blue painted cotton fabric. I beaded the petals to give it color and celebrate the beauty of her breast and what it symbolizes. I wanted it to be like a little “jewel” that had been removed from her.

From that first one, I created several others. Some were fully beaded and while sewing them, I thought, EVERY STITCH SYMBOLIZES THE LOVE  I HAVE FOR MY MOTHER AND MY ADMIRATION FOR THE PAIN AND LOSS SHE HAD TO GO THROUGH.

I have had many friends who have been diagnosed with breast cancer since my Mother was first diagnosed. Every time it happens, I think of the Badges and what they symbolize: how special a breast is to us women.

My Aunt Elena (my mother’s sister) was diagnosed a week ago and the tears flowed. I thought, WHY HER??? The only solace I found was the thought of naming a Badge of  Courage™ after her. My family has been lucky, everyone who has been touched by breast cancer has survived. My Grandmother, diagnosed at 48, died at almost 97! She lived a precious, long life full of happiness.

Whenever I hear of a woman who is diagnosed with breast cancer I think, “May they be OK. May they come out stronger than before and may they laugh at the face of death.”

Closer to our goal, thanks to Michelle Villalobos’ Risky Business!

A few weeks ago, Michelle Villalobos had us as a Partner at her fantastic event, the Women’s Success Summit.

Partner at Women's Success Summit- MIA2011This was the fourth time I had attended her infamous Women’s Summits; starting with the first one, “The Empowered Woman Success Summit” at the Coconut Grove Women’s Club on June 11th and June 12th of last year. That very summit was pivotal to me and my future. It was when I heard the keynote speaker Jessica Kizorek, of badassbusinesswomen.org, ask all of us to get up and tell the person next to us what we wanted to accomplish with our lives.

I naturally turned to my neighbor and told her I wanted to get more clients for my business. I had just started a small “boutique” ad agency called Zilveti Communications. When we had sat down, after telling our neighbor what we wanted to do with our lives, Jessica had us get up again and I will never forget her words. “Now tell your neighbor what you REALLY want to do but are afraid to say!” I turned to my neighbor and blurted out, “I want to use my art and creativity to help others”.

Flower of Hope Badge

Less than a month later, I had designed the first “Badge of Courage“, or “boob” as I fondly call them. I had also started a non-profit, Badges of Courage Foundation, to help low-income women who had been recently diagnosed with breast cancer.

It has been a year and a half since I uttered those words to my neighbor at the Summit and glorious events have occurred!

In February of this year, I participated in a contest and won a spot in an exclusive Mastermind given by none other than Jessica Kizorek and Michelle Villalobos! We spent two days of fun, tears, laughter, love and much success and met powerful, beautiful women. We listened to Michelle and Jessica pour out their wonderful ideas to us and created better opportunities for our companies. It was two days of hard work and pure fun!

In April, we finally received our 501 (c) (3) status- making us an official “non-profit” foundation.

In June, I was interviewed by Olga Connor of “El Nuevo Herald” (The Miami Herald’s Spanish language counterpart) for a one page spread that she wrote on me and the foundation.

In July, Barbara Palacios of AOL Latino, interviewed me for a special show to be featured in October, for breast cancer awareness.

And last but not least, Mercedes Soler of CNN en Español, interviewed me in October for a special “Pink Show” she created on breast cancer.

All of this, thanks to the question Jessica Kizorek posed: “Now tell your neighbor what you REALLY want to do but are afraid to say!”

Powerful words. Courageous words spoken by a true leader— a woman who is not afraid to call herself a BADASS, having created a movement called “Badass Business Women“— wanting to influence 1 million business women to publicly commit to their success.

BOCF table at Women's Success Summit- Nov 2011I have come full circle— I committed to help others with my art and creativity at the first Women’s Summit and now, at the fourth one, my team and I had a PARTNER table, thanks to Michelle Villalobos’ generosity. Thanks to that, we raised over $800! Monies that bring us closer to our $10,000 goal to help 10 women by the end of the year.

A great big THANK YOU to Michelle Villalobos and Jessica Kizorek! I am closer to my dream of helping others, because of you.

A story about a survivor and the great things she’s done!

This one was sent from Aida Phillips about her dear friend Mayte Prida.

Mayte used her adversity to help others and spread the word about breast cancer. She is a true heroine!

It takes courage to fight cancer.

That’s the headline in PODER Magazine’s online article about my foundation.  Powerful words and so true! I can still see my mother doing the “arañita” (spider crawl) exercises after she had her mastectomy. She’d be in pain and still had the courage to lean her arms against a wall and crawl her fingers up, slowly, like a spider until she could go no further. I’d watch her and want to cry because of the pain she was going through but I’d smile and say, “Good job Mami!” until she had to do them again, hours later.

My grandmother, Elena Perou, holding my mother (Marta Ostria) in her arms, my great-grandmother (Elena Farfán) and my grand-aunt (Carmen Perou).

It’s been 8 years since her surgery and she is cancer-free. Yes, she is the third generation of my family to survive this disease. My Great-Grandmother, Grandmother and Mother all had it and, miraculously, survived. My grandmother had it at 48 and lived to be almost 97! They are all featured in an interview that Barbara Palacios, of AOL Latino did of me.

It’s a Spanish language interview to raise awareness about me and the foundation and to tell women how important it is to get early detection.

This month, breast cancer awareness month, I try to do as much as possible to spread the word on how important it is to get early detection, do breast self-examination and lead a life that includes a healthy diet and exercise. My friend, Rhonda Smith, of Breast Cancer Partner, an online site and blog that is constantly offering advice on diet and self care for breast cancer survivors.

Tomorrow morning, Oct. 9, I will be participating in the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk  in Downtown Miami. I will proudly wear a pink bandeau over my breasts and sew some Badges of Courage on them to commiserate with my fellow women. Women who are courageous, gutsy, humble, strong, survivors, and soooooooo beautiful!

As PODER writes in their article, at the end of the month, on October 21st, I will be proudly hosting a silent auction at BluMoon Studio in Coconut Grove.

Invitation to silent auction for Badges of Courage Foundation

The DASH (Design and Architecture Senior High) Seniors in Fashion Design are each designing a Badge of Courage! After seeing the beautiful and creative work they produce, I cannot wait to see the marvelous badges they will come up with! As soon as I receive them, I will post the photos!
